It’s hard to believe that 15 years ago I began my sculpture installation Home Economics a Celebration of Canadian Women in the 20^th Century. What began as a personal challenge grew into a 27 foot installation exhibited in various public venues including the Hall of Honour on Parliament Hill. Though this journey I have experienced wondrous opportunities and a crashing disaster with the result that the series has developed a story of its own

My ladies have found new homes but their stories are carrying on. I have been invited to speak to various women’s groups about the history of Canadian women using my sculptures as visual tools.

With each presentation, I have researched the changes women experienced relevant to the group I’m addressing so my knowledge and perspective continues to evolve. This year alone I have given presentations to the Georgetown Canadian Federation of University Women, Halton Region Museum’s Celebrations of International Women’s Day, the Ontario Home Economics Association Annual Conference and I’m looking forward to meeting the ladies of Norval United Church Women’s Auxiliary in June.

I enjoy sharing my knowledge and creativity and best of all, I continue to learn more about our Canadian history.

The Courtyard : A Sculptor’s Studio and Gardens

332 Woodward Avenue at Court Street.

Blending the old and new, Sculptor Nancy Cuttle’s studio and 1922 historic home surround a courtyard sculpture garden.  An evolving art installation reminiscent of the ambitions of the Arts and Crafts movement, each element is original and hand-crafted.  Visit with the artist at work in her studio and discover the process involved in creating outdoor sculpture.

As well, Nancy’s exhibition “Telling Stories” continues at location 7 the Halton Region Museum Visitor’s Centre

In 1997 local sculptor Nancy Cuttle began a journey to make a personally significant work of art to mark the Millennium.  Since that time, through exhibitions and lectures, hundreds of people have seen Home Economics: A Celebration of Canadian Women in the 20th Century.

In celebration of International Women’s Day on Sunday March 7, Nancy will share her journey and her perspective on the history of women over the past century.

Exhibition Opening

Nancy Cuttle, a renowned local artist from Milton, will be on hand to showcase the opening of her exhibition of sculptures entitled Telling Stories.

“I want my art to communicate, to tell a story: and even better, to inspire you to think about your stories.”

Nancy has been communicating through her works of art, including painting, drawing and sculpting, for almost three decades.  She has won numerous awards in premier Juried Exhibitions in the Greater Toronto Area. Nancy completed a landmark sculpture series in celebration of Canadian women in the 20th century which was exhibited in the Hall of Honour of the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa, an honour never before bestowed on an artist. Nancy lives and works in Milton.  A strong advocate for the value of arts in the community, Nancy is Past President of Arts Milton and serves on the Fine Arts Society of Milton and Milton Historical Society executive boards.

Telling Stories will be featured in the Halton Art Gallery at the Halton Region Museum from February 21 to April 30, 2010.

Since my work often addresses contemporary woman’s place in society, it’s fun to see how my sculptures keep coming back to that subject.

This is my latest limestone carving, Walking Woman 009, which will be on display for the first time.

I have been working on a very complicated commission this year which has required a lot of research into materials and subject matter ( like how is a double bass constructed?).  I’ve discovered the wonders of Winterstone, a cementitious product developed by Lorne Winters.  I’ve decided to document the process of creating a sculpture in Winterstone as part of my exhibit for Studio Tour.
