Comfort or CONFRONT…an Artist’s Dilemma.
In a world full of
Conflicting thoughts and values
Too much information
Too little thought
What role can an artist play?
This year I’ve spent a lot of effort to bring comfort through FASM’s Hospital Mural Project.
But when I address social issues in my work by a sometimes confrontational approach some would rather ignore, I feel I’ve really accomplished my goal as an artist.
As a fellow artist I invite you to come see what I’ve been up to, Comfort or CONFRONT, and share your thoughts.
Our Annual Milton Studio Tour 2017 takes place on Saturday September 30 & Sunday October 1 from 10-5.

Breaching the Dogma
Breaching the Dogma
cast cement, fired clay and wire
My response to the conflict that organized religion has placed on society. The ordering of religious symbols, including the secular $, by global populations illustrates where the strength in numbers lies. Will this battered but determined human break away from or be crushed by the powerful dogma of religion?
Breaking Out
Breaking Out
raku fired clay and steel
Discovering the magic of clay and steel molded by fire.
Awarded Second Prize, Woolfitt’s Art Enterprises Inc. Award, Colour and Form Society Annual Open Juried Exhibition 2004
Walking Woman
Walking Woman 09
Indiana Limestone
This is my woman of the 1st decade of the 21st century.
(See Celebration of Canadian Women)
Every sculptor has to tackle a large piece of stone. What started as a 4’x 3’ x 3’ slab of limestone transformed into a contemporary take on Michael Snow’s iconic Walking Woman of the 60’s.
#1 for the moment
#1…for the moment
fired clay, found objects, wood, and glass
The unfortunate reality of what it takes to get ahead in this world…and we’re never # 1 for long. The “Winner” and “Contender” are delicately balanced so that with a bit of outside influence (a little poke) one loses, the other wins.
Venus Rising
Venus Rising
High fired paper clay with oxides and glazes mounted on cement and found steel.
What began as an optimistic portrayal of a contemporary Goddess of Love became another Warrior Woman rising from the destruction of our times.
In the Present/In the Past
In the Present/In the Past
fired clay, found objects, hydrocal casting, photocopy transfer
An imagined English war bride and her Canadian soldier 60 years later.
Awarded First Prize for Sculpture, The Bulova Watch Company Award, Visual Arts Mississauga 27th

In Praise of Older Women
In Praise of Older Women
Italian Alabaster mounted on Indiana Limestone
When I carved into this beautiful piece of alabaster, a much more seasoned woman than I had planned began to emerge. This became a very adventurous five year collaboration between the stone and the sculptor.
The Darling Fairy
The Darling Fairy
Winterstone, wire and solar-powered glass
A commission for the sculpture garden at the Darling Home for Kids. I thought that if I were a child trapped in a malfunctioning body all I would want to do is to be able to fly like a fairy.
Set in the hilly escarpment north of Milton, The Darling Home for Kids provides paediatric hospice care and respite services to families within communities in Ontario who have children with life-limiting or life-threatening illnesses requiring complex care and/or technology-dependent care. http://www.darlinghomeforkids.ca/

Winterstone and copper wire on wood base
I have discovered Winterstone, a cementitious product developed by a Toronto sculptor. Mixed with water; it models like clay, carves like stone and cures like cement. The steel armature allowed me to sculpt this piece with all the undercuts and varying thicknesses.
A tribute to a very dear friend who chose to spend his last year pursuing a passion “life” had forced him to set aside. Seducing his double bass, Bruce played gypsy jazz with Bohemian Swing to the end.
